Quintessence and the cosmological constant

چکیده

The idea of quintessence originates from an attempt to understand the smallness of the “cosmological constant” or dark energy in terms of the large age of the universe [1]. As a characteristic consequence, the amount of dark energy may be of the same order of magnitude as radiation or dark matter during a long period of the cosmological history, including the present epoch. Today, the inhomogeneous energy density in the universe – dark and baryonic matter – is about ρinhom ≈ (10eV). This number is tiny in units of the natural scale given by the Planck mass Mp = 1.22 ·10 GeV. Nevertheless, it can be understood easily as a direct consequence of the long duration of the cosmological expansion: a dominant radiation or matter energy density decreases ρ ∼ M p t and the present age of the universe is huge, t0 ≈ 1.5 · 10 yr. It is a natural idea that the homogeneous part of the energy density in the universe – the dark energy – also decays with time and therefore turns out to be small today. A simple realization of this idea, motivated by the anomaly of the dilatation symmetry, considers a scalar field φ with an exponential potential [1]

Nonlinear evolution of spherical perturbation in the Universe with cosmological constant and quintessence

We generalize the spherical collapse model for the formation of bound objects to apply in a Universe with cosmological constant and quintessence. We calculate the critical condition for collapse of an overdense region and give exact values of the characteristic densities and redshifts of its evolution. We apply the results to calculate the mass function of bound objects. Comparison with the dat...

Cosmological Constant and Axions in String Theory

String theory axions appear to be promising candidates for explaining cosmological constant via quintessence. In this paper, we study conditions on the string compactifications under which axion quintessence can happen. For sufficiently large number of axions, cosmological constant can be accounted for as the potential energy of axions that have not yet relaxed to their minima. In compactificat...

An alternative to a cosmological constant is quintessence, defined as a slowlyvarying scalar field potential V (φ). If quintessence is observationally significant, an epoch of inflation is beginning at the present epoch, with φ the slowly-rolling inflaton field. In contrast with ordinary inflation, quintessence seems to require extreme fine tuning of the potential V (φ). The degree of fine-tuni...

Effective cosmological “constant” and quintessence

In this paper we present exactly solved extended quintessence models; furthermore, through a dynamical effective Q-cosmological ”constant”, we recover some of the Λ decaying cases found in the literature. Finally we introduce a sort of complementarity between the Q-dominated or Λdominated expansions of the Universe. e-mail addresses: [email protected] [email protected]

Conformal fixed point, cosmological constant, and quintessence.

We connect a possible solution for the "cosmological constant problem" to the existence of a (postulated) conformal fixed point in a fundamental theory. The resulting cosmology leads to quintessence, where the present acceleration of the expansion of the universe is linked to a crossover in the flow of coupling constants.

Quintessence Axion Potential Induced by Electroweak Instanton Effects

Recent cosmological observations suggest the presence of small but nonzero cosmological constant Λcos ≃ (2 × 10−3 eV)4. It is an intriguing possibility that such a small cosmological constant is supplied by the potential energy density of an ultralight axion-like field (called as quintessence axion). If this axion couples to the electroweak gauge fields, its potential may be generated by the el...
